The blood bank technical specialist performs technical duties and provides technical knowledge and support to staff, physicians and medical director wherever transfusion services are provided. This position demonstrates the ability to respond to technical emergency calls for the transfusion services.
This position is responsible for managing, coordinating and accountability for effectively using the operational reports of laboratory information systems and providing adequate staffing levels as needed in the laboratory management on-call rotation.
The technical specialist performs testing procedures and provides clinical result interpretation, ensuring quality assurance and technical standards are met. The position supports maintaining operational continuity and monitors laboratory activities to meet clinical and regulatory standards. The position develops new testing, validation and evaluation of new equipment, reagent instrumentation and technologies.
This position participates in and coordinates the development of policy and procedures and timely review. The position collects data, maintains quality assurance statistics, identifies training needs and ensures staff receives in-service training and education for their jobs. The position is responsible for reviewing quality control records, preventive maintenance records and implementing corrective actions according to applicable regulations and policies.
The position will remain abreast of current technical developments in transfusion services in order to provide technical expertise. The position represents the laboratory on the Transfusion Services Committee and, if needed, any other organizational committees related to this expertise.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in medical technology or chemical, physical or biological sciences required.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: Medical Technologist ASCP or Blood Bank ASCP and Specialist Blood Bank ASCP required.

EXPERIENCE: 3-5 years of blood bank technical experience in the US/Canada within the last 10 years. Proficiency in laboratory clinical applications preferred at time of hire. Recent regulatory compliance experience required. Incumbents within position will be trained appropriately and then skill will be required for this position within 30-60 days from date of hire.
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

Strict compliance with laboratory fraud and abuse policies and requirements in an employment condition.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Potential for exposure to the hazards and risk of the hospital environment, including exposure to infectious disease, blood-borne pathogens, hazardous substances and potential injury.
This position may involve increased amounts of standing, bending and manual manipulation, as well as some light lifting. Must have the ability to distinguish colors.

Core competencies will be assessed primarily to the following patient population(s) served (with the exception of newborns): all diagnoses/conditions of patients admitted to the hospital.

This position reports to the Laboratory Transfusion Services/Quality Manager.
