POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Director of Nursing, the medical assistant assist nurses, medical providers and counselors with day-to-day responsibilities of John Brooks Recovery Center (JBRC) inpatient and outpatient units.

This position supports organizational goals by providing quality customer service, participating in performance improvement efforts and demonstrating a commitment to teamwork and cooperation.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • EDUCATION: Graduate of an accredited medical assistant school.
  • LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: Medical assistant certification. CPR certification.
  • EXPERIENCE: 1-3 years of experience in substance abuse treatment preferred. Ability to handle a high volume of interactions with frequent interruptions required. Proficiency in clinical applications preferred at time of hire. Incumbents within position will be trained appropriately and then skill will be required for this position within 30-60 days from date of hire.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Collects medical information and history from clients going into the OPMM, IOP, Residential and Detox programs and records it in the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Collects medical information from other facilities and clients and records it in the EMR. Responsible for phone messages, communication with other providers, e-mails and data collecting.
  • Assists medical providers and nurses with client physicals; obtains vital signs, height and weight; administers TB testing; performs blood glucose monitoring, urine pregnancy and urine drug screens; and accurately documents results in clients' chart in EMR. Reports any abnormal results to LPN, RN or provider on duty.
  • Responsible for assisting in dispensing residential medications as guided by licensed personnel and according to medical assistant license. Accurately charts on paper Medical Administration Record (MAR) or in EMR.
  • Maintains client confidentiality in accordance with JBRC policy and procedures and state and federal HIPAA regulations.
  • Ability to make verbal and written presentations to clients and staff as related to program or other medical issues.
  • Assists in scheduling admissions, annual physicals and TB tests for clients.
  • Assists with prior authorizations and precertification of diagnostic tests, medications or medical equipment.
  • Responsible for client check-in forms, discharge forms, inventory forms, room reassignments and Personal Property Checklist and effectively documents all information.
  • Monitors all client behavior as needed, de-escalating potentially violent situations, resolving conflicts and communicating pertinent information to the RN or LPN.
  • Responsible for cleaning and maintaining the medical areas, exam rooms, front desk area, bathrooms and medical equipment with proper PPE and infection control protocols.
  • Attends and participates in all required meetings and trainings. Must attend minimum 6 staff meetings per calendar year.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor and other management as required.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
  • Capable of lifting approximately 10 to 20 lbs.
  • Walking, the ability to move around on foot to accomplish tasks or frequent monitoring of clients in detox, residential or outpatient setting.
  • Ability to climb multiple flights of stairs.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to communicate both orally and written in a calm and respectful manner. This requires skills to write accurate documentation regarding the safety and client incidents via reports, e-mail and electronic medical records.
  • Must be able to handle stressful situations in a professional manner. Ability to establish and maintain a positive, professional and cooperative working relationship with all levels of employees.   • Must have active listening skills. Demonstrate the ability to interact with clients in an appropriate therapeutic manner. Ability to be respectful of diverse cultures and ethnic and religious backgrounds, as well as alternative lifestyles.
  • When conducting searches, employee will be supplied with appropriate PPE.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment when supervising and monitoring clients in outpatient and residential. Ability to recognize the elements of a client crisis and act accordingly to de-escalate a situation.
  • Knowledge in procedures necessary to oversee the safety of clients and staff in all JBRC facilities.
  • Ability to deliver service in a way that is responsive, respectful, caring and helpful manner while maintaining confidentiality and ethical and professional boundaries. Ability to demonstrate responsiveness and flexibility to client's needs and priorities of each shift.
  • Must have computer skills required to chart pertinent health information. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office, to include Excel.
  • Must have medical knowledge of medications and insurance protocols and ability to organize data in Excel spreadsheets and EMR.
  • Assist with PowerPoint presentations and maintains files on Share drive.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
Demonstrates the technical competencies as established on the Assessment and Evaluation Tool.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position requires repetitive motion, hearing, pushing, reaching, reading, seeing, speaking, standing and walking a majority of the time. Spends time with such equipment as a computer terminal, fax machine, copier and telephone.
